THE Giving

Skitoberfest: Giving Back to the Community:
Introducing the Warren Miller Freedom Foundation, a young entrepreneur program serving to educate area youth on the steps of conceiving, planning, and forming a business on their own and truly achieve young entrepreneur success. Educational sessions to be offered at Boyne Mountain and Boyne Highlands and FREE of charge to interested youth. Classes are once per week for 10 weeks and dependent on interest, a 10-week session could be offered as early as this winter season.

The program targets ages 12-17 and local schools and youth organizations are asked to assist in generating awareness for this youth opportunity. The program focuses on development of the entrepreneurial spirit and is taught by area professionals.

During the Skitoberfest event, the program will have a booth in the Snowsports Summit with informational flyers, Warren Miller videos and a sign-up sheet where those interested can let us know whether winter or spring is better for them and/or if they are interested in learning more. http://www.warrenmiller.org/

The art world will descend upon Downtown Petoskey for its eleventh annual Gallery Walk. This evening of art and entertainment has definitely become a community tradition.

Participating art galleries will greet guests on the third Thursday in June, June 17, 2010, from 6:00 to 9pm in an open-house format and offer delights for your eyes, ears, and taste buds. Many of the galleries will have the artists present to introduce their works.

As a wonderful and exciting wrap up to the evening, art lovers will get a chance to win some fabulous art donated by the participating galleries. Each gallery that you visit during the evening earns you another dot on your walking map, and each dot earns you a ticket to go in the drawing. Additional tickets are earned with each purchase that you make. The tickets will then be drawn at the Afterglow Party in the Rose Garden at Stafford’s Perry Hotel. Thousands of dollars worth of art is given away each year.

Walking maps are free and will be available at the Petoskey Downtown Office, the Petoskey Regional Chamber of Commerce, and the participating galleries. So, get a babysitter, grab your friends, and stroll around Downtown Petoskey and soak up the cultured atmosphere.

Once again Boyne Mountain will be the site for a legendary party of epic proportions. This is where Mardis Gras meets the mountain. Outrageous and crazy become the norm for the weekend, from skiers and snowboarders in costumes to the always hilarious Slush Cup. As in the past couple years, we will be allowing guests to transport their own beverages of choice to the Victor Halfway house to enjoy the mayhem of the on-hill party hosted by Dave Faulkner.

Showcasing the best Chefs in the state of Michigan.  If you’re looking for a fun-filled, exciting event don’t miss the 3rd Annual Chefs Challenge for Challenge Mountain, April 23-24.

Chef Teams from northern and southern Michigan present the state’s great agricultural diversity at its succulent finest, complimented by fine Michigan wines and micro-brews, a true premier Michigan event.  Weekend events includes exciting seminars, culinary exhibits and two Chef competitions along with great fine and wine.  This year’s celebrity judges are Chef Michelle Bommarito, Chef Hermann Suhs, Chef Angus Campbell, Chef Rob Haney, Barb Tholin and Ruth Mossok Johnston.

Judging takes place in two separate events:

Tasting: Chefs, micro brewers, vintners and spirits distillers are judged by a team of celebrity judges and the public
Iron Chef Cook-Off: A battle between the winning teams from the north and south

The tasting is from 11 am - 2 pm on Saturday, April 24 in the Civic Center.  Cost is $25 for 8 tickets good towards food and beverage tastings.  Entry/tickets can be paid at the door.  The Iron-Chef Cook-Off also happens on Saturday beginning at 6 pm and is $100 per person.  For Iron-Chef Cook-Off reservations, please call 231-582-1186.  All proceeds benefit Challenge Mountain.
